Developing a Community-Significant Collection of Maps Available via a Single App

Based in Finland, the customer is an environmental institution that unites researchers, companies, authorities, citizens, and media to improve the existing environmental situation both locally and globally.

Outcome

In collaboration with Hymux Technologies, the customer developed an application that helps the local community of researchers, environmental enthusiasts, professionals of different trades, tourists, etc. to enjoy extensive maps of coastal waters for whatever purpose they need.

Challenges

Under the project, the Hymux Technologies team had to address the following issues:

• The system should be developed as a single-page web application with no back-end, which imposed certain constraints on integrating 20+ APIs—acting as data sources— and visualizing information in an intuitive way, while maintaining high performance.
• The majority of APIs did not support SSL, which caused compatibility issues when retrieving user location data for real-time information display.

Solution

Using Vue.js under the hood, the developed solution features numerous maps that offer extensive information—gathered from 20+ data sources—across such parameters as water temperature and depth, the height of the waves, wind direction, a diversity of seaweed zones, etc.

Employing the maps, users can check vessel traffic (with vessel type indicated) in real time, browse through historical places known for major shipwrecks, or get satellite data. The maps also display the borders of national parks and marked no-trespassing zones.

Engineers at Hymux Technologies delivered functionality that enables users to map a route, measure a distance, etc. Our developers also made it possible to share a specific set of data via link, so that another user would see exactly the same map with all the coordinates and inputs.

To ensure the application was able to correctly identify a user location, the experts at Hymux Technologies tuned a proxy server to support the SSL protocol. With an adaptive and responsive design, the application operates smoothly in all the web and mobile browsers.
