Benefits of Using AR in the Restaurant Industry

Investing in Augmented Reality is always a strategic decision. Restaurant and café owners would not use AR if this technology did not deliver tangible business results. Let’s take a closer look at the advantages AR offers restaurants.

Enhanced Dining Experiences

Augmented Reality allows restaurants to create exciting and interactive scenarios that take the dining experience to a whole new level. From 3D food visualization to gamification, AR adds an element of engagement and a “wow factor” that cannot be achieved with traditional menus and interior design alone.

Increased Customer Engagement

AR opens up new opportunities for personalization and interactive communication with guests. Diners can customize their meals, learn about the history of the establishment through virtual elements, or interact with the brand in a playful way. Such experiences are memorable, generate positive emotions, and contribute to increased customer loyalty.

More Informed Decision-Making

AR menus let customers visualize their food ahead of making a choice. This reduces decision time, lowers the likelihood of disappointment, and helps people make informed choices. This is especially valuable for visitors with special dietary requirements or preferences. AR lets them evaluate the list of ingredients and the appearance of a dish before it is served.

Brand Building and Competitive Advantage

Integrating AR into your marketing strategy helps restaurants stand out from the competition. Immersive technologies demonstrate a commitment to innovation and customer focus, creating a modern and attractive brand image. By implementing AR, restaurants not only improve their level of service, but also attract a tech-savvy audience that values new experiences and is willing to share them with others.

How AR Enhances Restaurant Menus

Menu visualization is one of the key ways AR is transforming the restaurant industry. Traditional menus can sometimes be limited in showing the true essence of a dish. Augmented Reality technology changes that!

How does it work? Guests simply scan a QR code placed on the table or in promotional materials, and an interactive AR menu opens on their smartphone or tablet. Dishes come to life in 3D, complete with animations, ingredient lists or nutritional facts.

Restaurant owners are adopting AR menus because they offer multiple advantages:

  • Increased average check – 3D visualization makes dishes more appealing and encourages guests to try new items. When customers see how appetizing a dessert or cocktail looks, they’re more likely to order spontaneously.
  • Reduced staff workload – AR menus answer common guest questions, speed up the decision-making process, and allow staff to focus on providing higher-quality service.
  • Relevance and flexibilityAR menus are easy to update with seasonal items, promotions, or price adjustments, eliminating printing costs and ensuring constant accuracy.
  • Improved hygiene and safety – Unlike paper menus, AR menus are completely contactless. Guests only need a smartphone to browse dishes, which is especially valuable in the post-pandemic era.

By combining convenience, innovation, and customer engagement, AR menus are transforming the way restaurants present their offerings and interact with guests.

Augmented Reality for New Product Launches

Launching new dishes or drinks always involves risk: guests may not notice them on the menu or may be reluctant to try something unfamiliar. Augmented Reality helps solve this problem and turns the presentation of new items into an exciting and memorable event.

As an example, we can recall how the Jack Daniels whiskey brand used AR for a new product launch. For nine months, visitors to Slug and Lettuce bars could scan a QR code on each Lynchburg Lemonade they ordered and find themselves transported virtually to the Jack Daniels distillery. There, they could see how the world-famous whiskey is made. Users didn’t need to download an app. When they visited the Jack Daniels website through their browser, the AR experience loaded automatically.

An AR experience like this reduces mistrust and motivates guests to try the drink. At the same time, the novelty of the technology itself becomes a marketing tool. Visitors are more likely to share their impressions on social media, which means the bar gains organic reach and strengthens its image as an innovative establishment.

AR for Restaurant Employee Training

According to the study, a typical fast food employee needs 296 hours of training to be fully prepared to work in the kitchen. Of course, employers would like to speed up this process.

Augmented Reality can help make training faster, more efficient, and more interesting.

Thanks to AR, training can take place directly “on the job” without the help of experienced colleagues. A new employee puts on AR glasses, receives a notification about an incoming order, and then starts the hamburger preparation process using one of three methods: voice, head movements, or the ‘PLAY’ and ‘REPEAT’ marker system on gloves. The AR system indicates where to find the ingredient and plays a video with instructions. The trainee can repeat the video or move on to the next step.

In addition, AR can also be useful in the kitchen: new chefs can see visual cues directly in Augmented Reality. This helps them learn new recipes and serving standards more quickly.

In one scientific experiment, chefs were divided into three groups: one group was not given any information about correct portion sizes; the second was given verbal instructions; and the third used an AR app to visualize standard portions. The AR group made the fewest mistakes and demonstrated the most accurate results.

Social and Visual Marketing for Restaurants

Nowadays, it is important for restaurants not only to delight guests with delicious food, but also to create a visual effect that people want to share on social media. AR helps with this and provides an immediate dynamic, engaging advantage.

Augmented Reality can turn a regular trip to a restaurant into an event worth sharing. Imagine: a guest points their phone camera at their food and a virtual animation appears on the screen. Or they open the menu and see the dessert come to life in 3D. Moments like these create a “wow” effect, so guests immediately take photos and videos for social media.

For example, the McDonald’s restaurant chain is famous for its active use of AR filters on Instagram and Snapchat. Their games (“Burger Tower”) and quizzes (“Which Crispy Chicken?”) engage the audience and create vivid visual content for social media.

Real-Life Examples of AR in Restaurant Marketing

It is no longer uncommon to encounter Augmented Reality in restaurants around the world. Some cases are especially interesting and worthy of attention.

Tenshino

During the Cherry Blossom Festival, Tenshino Restaurant at Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel offered a special AR menu. Guests could enjoy a Japanese dinner (4-course set) while interacting with 3D Augmented Reality art. By scanning the QR code on their plate, they were taken on a virtual journey through Japan: from Tokyo Tower to Osaka Castle, from Itsukushima Shrine to Mount Fuji and other iconic locations.

The AR artwork was created by renowned Thai designer and illustrator Pichaya O. Guests saved videos and photos and shared them on social media.

Bareburger

The Bareburger chain in New York was one of the first restaurants to use Augmented Reality to present its dishes. Instead of a traditional menu, guests were able to see their food before it arrived at the table.

To do this, the restaurant implemented AR technology in partnership with Kabaq. Using Snapchat, visitors could point their camera at an image of a dish and see it in 3D right on their table. Patties, sauces, side dishes, and even portion sizes were displayed as realistically as possible. This allowed visitors not only to evaluate the appearance and deliciousness of the dish, but also to make a more informed choice.

Were the restaurant chain owners satisfied with the result? Definitely!  Many guests admitted that when they saw an appetizing dessert or an unusual burger in AR, they decided to order something extra. Thus, the technology directly contributed to an increase in the average check. In addition, the AR menu reduced the workload on waiters: customers made their choices faster and asked fewer questions about the ingredients and presentation of dishes.

Bareburger’s experience has shown that AR menus can be more than just entertainment; they can be a real tool for increasing profits and improving the customer experience.

Starbucks Reserve Roastery

At Starbucks Reserve Roastery in Shanghai, guests had the opportunity to enjoy delicious coffee while watching an immersive show. All this was made possible by Augmented Reality technology. When guests pointed their smartphones at interior elements, such as a giant copper tank, the usual tour turned into an immersive show: animations of the coffee roasting process, visualizations of the beans’ journey from the tank to the coffee bar, and detailed stories about the preparation of the drink appeared on the screen.

Coca-Cola

Of course, a giant like Coca-Cola keeps up with the latest trends and happily uses immersive tech in its marketing campaigns. As part of a holiday campaign, Coca-Cola launched its first large-scale AR experience, where polar bear cubs came to life right on cans or bottles.

How did it work? You had to scan the packaging using the official Coca-Cola mobile app, and a scene would appear on your smartphone screen: the cubs would ride on sleds, have snowball fights, or put on a light show. A special visual effect was created when two packages were scanned simultaneously — the polar family played the song “Jingle Bells” on glass bottles.

These examples clearly show that Augmented Reality is no longer just a spectacular entertainment tool. Today, AR helps restaurants and cafes strengthen their brand, increase customer loyalty, and create unique experiences that cannot be replicated using traditional methods.

Challenges and Limitations for AR in the Restaurant Industry

In this article, we have already discussed in detail the advantages that AR brings to the restaurant industry. However, like any technology, Augmented Reality has its limitations. It is important to keep these in mind, not only for restaurant owners, but also for specialists who plan marketing campaigns using AR. So what are they?

  • Hardware and device limitations: AR capabilities are highly dependent on the capabilities of the user’s device. Older devices may not support AR applications or may provide poor-quality capabilities.
  • Content development costs: Creating high-quality AR content can be expensive, especially for complex applications. For small companies, this can be a challenging task.
  • User acceptance: Not all users are familiar with AR technology or feel comfortable using it. Marketing campaigns should take this factor into account.
  • Internet dependency: Most AR applications require a stable internet connection. In conditions of weak signal or poor Wi-Fi, using the technology can end up causing irritation.
  • Data privacy and security: Using AR may involve collecting data about guest behavior (e.g., through a camera or geolocation), and this might raise questions for customers.
  • Technology support and updates: AR applications require constant updates and technical support. Without this, they quickly become obsolete or stop working properly on new devices and operating systems.
  • Accessibility and inclusivity issues: AR content can be difficult to use for older people or those with visual/hearing impairments.

The limitations of AR are very real, but they do not overshadow its potential. Those who manage to integrate the technology effectively will gain a powerful tool for standing out in the market and creating a unique customer experience.
